Me2, a "groundbreaking" novel by queer author, M. Christian, promises to offer a "shocking new view of queer identity." These are quite some words to live up to, especially in today's cramped market of entertainment that panders to the gay community. Unfortunately,
Me2, breaks no ground, nor does it shock with new views. Instead, it places itself safely in the center of the dance floor with it's shirt sticking out of its back pocket. It only took me a few pages to lose interest in this story, mainly because of a highly unlikable protagonist who is as bland as the Starbucks where he spends most of his time.
He lives in a world surrounded by people who don't have names, but are referred to by titles such as Hippie Guy, Black Girl With Attitude, Big Nerd, Old Troll, Leather Daddy, and Lipstick Lesbian. I wasn't sure if these were meant to inspire laughter, especially because these cliches do exactly what you would expect of them. Can you guess the character who spends a good portion of his time on the page rambling about Star Trek? No, sadly, it does not end here. The main character does interesting things like working out at the gym, fooling around with a fuck buddy, talking about his nice, toned body, and dishing out knowledge about celebrities' personal lives. Unbearable, yes, and what makes it worse is knowing that a clone of this character is going to appear in these pages somewhere, and once he appears... Ok, I won't spoil anything out of respect for the author, but I will tell you that it never gained my interest. This novel promises an interesting concept about queer identity and could have provided that, had it poked fun at stereotypes instead of embracing them. Deliberate or not, the tone is far from tongue-in-cheek and that is one of its major flaws. Too many interesting possibilities were missed here, leaving us with another gay piece that is scared to break through the boundaries that the mainstream queer community has placed around itself.
