PlanetOut Inc, the publicly traded online media company (LGBT) that own Gay.com, Planet Out, and Kleptomanica.com, bought nearly all of the assets of LPI Media for $31 million. LPI Media is a privately held company that publishes major gay magazines including The Advocate, Out, Out Traveler, and HIV Plus and owns book publisher Alyson Publications which publishes and sells queer related titles.
Critics immediately began questioning the benefits of an acquisition that has arguably created the world's largest queer media company.
Queer Day Magazine points out, "for the millions of LGBT voices inevitably lost or drowned out by the homogenized mega-media corporate interests with an eye fixed on monopolization".
