Tuesday, November 22. 2005The New Old New Queer Cinema With Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin making it onto DVD, I've been revisiting the filmmaker that was dubbed a leading voice in '90's New Queer Cinema.My first Araki experience was sitting all by my lonesome at the Quad Cinemas watching Totally Fucked Up - a movie I was seeing just because James Duval was totally hot. Needless to say I was a fan from shot one and after his 1997 film Nowhere I became a rabid Araki fanatic. Beyond his ability to create fantastic worlds on shoestring budgets, the polymorphous sexuality of his characters, his subversion of traditional mores/genres/expectations, and casting magic that should put Big Hollywood starfuckers to shame, his films consistently kick ass! As I've been re-experiencing his work, though, I have to say: it really puts the current crop of queer filmmakers to shame. Araki's knowledge of film history and the ambition he shows in his work (in terms of both subject matter and technique) far surpass any directors producing narrative queer cinema. What kind of kick in the pants do these people need? Sunday, November 13. 2005Planet Out Buys The Advocate & Out Magazine
PlanetOut Inc, the publicly traded online media company (LGBT) that own Gay.com, Planet Out, and Kleptomanica.com, bought nearly all of the assets of LPI Media for $31 million. LPI Media is a privately held company that publishes major gay magazines including The Advocate, Out, Out Traveler, and HIV Plus and owns book publisher Alyson Publications which publishes and sells queer related titles.
Critics immediately began questioning the benefits of an acquisition that has arguably created the world's largest queer media company. Queer Day Magazine points out, "for the millions of LGBT voices inevitably lost or drowned out by the homogenized mega-media corporate interests with an eye fixed on monopolization". Monday, November 7. 2005Doing It Greek Style- Gay Fraternity Guys Come Out Yes the rumors are true and I have no reason to deny that I am among the many gay men that rushed, pledged and then became a college fraternity guy. I could go into details but I wouldn't want ruin any gay fraternity fantasies. So, before you start asking for more let me just say that I enjoyed my fraternity experience even though I didn't come out to my brothers until after college (yes they're fine about it).The whole idea of coming out in a fraternity is fairly new and it's the topic of the new book Brotherhood : Gay Life in College Fraternities by Shane L. Windmeyer. As quoted on the Lambda 10 website, "Never before have we heard about the trials of rushing a fraternity openly gay or the reality of an intimate sexual relationship among brothers," explained Windmeyer. "Ten years ago that was unheard of or unspoken. In 'Brotherhood,' the writers share details about both experiences, along with the resulting triumphs or harms." Windmeyer, is the author of Out on Fraternity Row and the founder of the Lambda 10 Project which deals with gay fraternity issues. Wednesday, November 2. 2005High School Crush Last night I watched the Canadian movie Denial, and it touched me immensely. It was about this jock and his high school crush. Well maybe not exactly his crush in high school, but they were high school buddies and then he is so madly in love with him. This guy Merrick is in denial and continues to sleep with the confused jock, Troy. And at the end Troy decides to leave and get a life for himself.My goodness, so much it reminded of my own story. Well you see, it wasn't exactly the same story I had in high school, but the story reminded me of my feelings to him so much. "The high school crush," I hate this feeling. I am having butterflies in my stomach all over again. It's more than 10 years and what, I still can't get over it? Apparently so. Nothing ever happened, and nothing will ever happen. At least, I told him that I was gay last year. He was cool about it but he never told me that he was gay either. Oh bummer. Okay, I convinced myself that he's in denial. Queers, we have drag all year long, and I don’t just mean drag queens and kings, but an affinity for dressing up, putting on airs, partying and looking like a slut. Hetero’s, however, only have this one day out of the whole entire year when it’s okay to be whatchuwannabe and express/expose yourself. Well, that and Mardis Gras, which may not happen this year…Poor things have such pent up yearnings all year to let loose that when October 31st rolls along they explode. Case in point: Straight men dressing up like Girls/Women and filling the streets with drunken screams. What’s that about? There should be an underground club/bar where it’s okay for straight men to tranvesticise all year long.
