Until 1967 it was illegal (and a sin to many) to marry someone from a different race
(www.LovingDay.org).
In light of this I ask you to imagine if the question asked in last week's debate wasn't "do you believe homosexuality is a choice" but "is it wrong to marry someone of another race?" Consider in this scenario that Mary Cheney is married to or seriously considering marrying a Latin, Asian, or African American man.
Now imagine, if you will, that a constitutional amendment has been proposed to ban interracial marriage and that Mary Cheney is the chair of the re-election committee to the very administration that proposed the amendment.
A lot has been made out of the fact that John Kerry mentioned Mary Cheney in the final debate and people from all sides have questioned why he would mention her. I say how could he NOT mention her in light of the very scenario I just proposed.
We know that Mary Cheney is a lesbian, she is public about it, and that her family has mentioned it in the past. The issue of sexuality has been brought up repeatedly in this campaign to divide our country but the simple truth is that there are gays and lesbians in every party and non-party. This is not a red state blue state issue.
The controversy about Mary Cheney being mentioned in the debate is a controversy for one single reason:
HOMOPHOBIA!
Some argue that sexuality is a "private matter" to which I say PISH PISH! The act of sex may indeed be private but sexuality or sexual identity should be no more private than gender, race or ethnicity. We assume people are heterosexual all the time so now it's time for all of us to stop assuming and start talking about it!
In years past it wasn't uncommon for mixed-race couples to tip toe around and be private about their relationship because it was frowned upon and seen as bad, wrong, illegal, or sinful. The simple fact is that Mary Cheney is a lesbian. She is the chair of her father's campaign. The administration she supports has been very divisive and un-American about the issue of homosexuality and Americans deserve to know that this issue is cross party.
I was so happy when I came across
Debating the Veep's Daughter (requires login
