Following up on the comment left by Casey Setzer on my post on the State of the Union a couple days ago, I dug up this press release from the Human Rights Campaign. And by dug up I mean went to their site and clicked...no actual dirt involved.
State of the Union: Bush's Comparison Between Marriage Fairness and Dirty Politicians Off the Mark
I should work for them or something. Although I think rattling off insane opinions from the blogosphere suits me better. I mean, let's face it: HRC is all politics. Sometimes in the lamest of ass-kissing, hand-shaking ways. I think we'd get more done in these highly contentious times if there were something akin to a nationwide ACT UP-ish movement biting back for every Matthew Shepard or Brandon Teena. And the HRC with all it's civilized, yuppie-centric "Buying for Equality" would probably prefer that I not say such things.
On a related note, I must confess that I did not watch the State of the Union this year. The Alito appointment gave me such a migraine that I had to read the transcript the next morning, leading me to a fascinating realization. That is one amazing speech! The ways in which it dictates morality praising science while calling it into question, calling for alternative energy sources while postponing their introduction into the marketplace, and (as stated before) equating legal - if controversial - activities with clearly unscrupulous ones is a real trip. Give it a look at the New York Times website.
Transcript: 'We Strive to be a Compassionate, Decent, Hopeful Society
I begin to wonder if everyone in America is just so pre-occupied with the way he talks that they don't see the brainwashing that's going on here. The liberal folks are all, "Look how stupid he is! Nook-yoo-lerrr! HA!" and the conservative folks are all, "He sounds just like my next door neighbor's sweet grand daddy!" and so no one is able to dissect or detect the brilliantly insidious things he's actually saying until the meme has already been planted.
No, I'm not getting all conspiracy theory on you. Just read the speech. You'll see what I mean.
