Being queer isn't as easy as black and white. Life, for most people, is not gay or straight. Besides the fact that your post complently ignores bi and pan -sexual folks, for who abortion may indeed hit closer to home, there is also the simple fact that too many young queer boys experiment and/or try to "prove themselves straight" by having sex with women at young ages. Again, making abortion a very personal issue for those involved.
Regardless of these exclusions, I must agree with you that any issue in which the government decides what you can/can not do with your body is out of lines and is an issue for everyone to be concerned about.
Chris, all good points. I wasn't ignoring bi- and pan- sexual people, though. As you point out, those people have a very clear connection to abortion, and therefore would (I hope) have a personal opinion on the matter. The same goes for those uncertain young queer boys.
Rather, I think there are a great many self-identified gay men who believe abortion is a women's issue and since they don't see themselves as being with women, they think they can either: a) adopt earlier generation's conservative values without thought or b) have no opinion whatsoever. It's these people who haven't thought about the pro-choice/pro-life debate that I'm hoping will see the connection and thereby think through their stance or lack thereof. |
